Ich kann mit einer Analogie antworten. Intelligente und sehr erfahrene Menschen schlossen sich zu einer Kooperative zusammen und beschlossen, in Wien selbst ein sehr großes Cello zu bauen. Damit ein solch exzentrisches Bauwerk nicht trotzig wirkt und die umliegenden kultivierten Städter nicht verärgert, wurde das gigantische Cello als Haus bezeichnet. Optisch sieht die Konstruktion nicht wie ein einfaches Musikinstrument aus, aber innerlich habe ich einen anderen Eindruck. Dieses seltsame Instrument ist aus österreichischem Holz gefertigt, ordentlich poliert, lackiert und bereit für ein Konzert, genau wie ein echtes Cello.

I can answer using an analogy. Intelligent and very experienced people gathered in a cooperative and decided to build a very large cello in Vienna itself. So that such an eccentric structure would not seem defiant and would not anger the surrounding cultured townspeople, the gigantic cello was called a house. Visually, the structure does not look like a simple musical instrument, but inside another impression I have. This strange instrument is made of Austrian wood, properly polished, varnished and ready for a concert, just like a real cello.

Wenn Sie sich ihm nähern, werden Sie nur einen großen Kasten sehen, der den Wohnhäusern in der Umgebung sehr ähnlich ist. Es handelt sich nicht um eine clevere Verschwörung, sondern um eine optimale und zweckmäßige Struktur, die von Philosophen und Architekten entworfen wurde. Ein hölzernes Musikinstrument wird seltsam klingen, wenn man es nicht konsequent spielt; es muss vielmehr konsequent erklingen. Ein Ding muss spielen, es muss leben.

If you approach it, you will only see a big box very similar to the apartment buildings around, it is not a clever conspiracy; it is an optimal and utilitarian structure designed by philosophers and architects. A wooden musical instrument will sound strange if you don’t play it consistently; rather it must sound consistently. A thing must play, it must live.

Es ist ein Orchester mit nur einem Instrument. Die Symbiose zwischen dem Instrument und den Bewohner:innen, die alle sorgfältig nach ihren musikalischen und architektonischen Kenntnissen ausgewählt wurden. Eine Musikschule und eine Kunstwerkstatt wurden in dem Gebäude eingerichtet, um ein hohes künstlerisches Niveau zu gewährleisten. Die Bewohner:innen jeden Alters müssen in der Lage sein, ein Instrument zu spielen und zu stimmen, aber es ist nicht für jeden geeignet. Was habe ich, ein Künstler-Fotograf, einen ganzen Monat lang in diesem Haus gemacht?

Its a single instrument orchestra. The symbiosis of the inhabitants and the instrument. All residents of the cello house were carefully selected based on their musical and architectural literacy. A music school and an art workshop were established in the building to maintain a high artistic level. Residents of all ages must be able to play and tune an instrument, but it is not for everyone. What did I, an artist-photographer, do for a whole month in this house?

Ich habe dieses phänomenale Instrument mit seinen Bewohner:innen als Haus fotografiert. Ich versuchte zu hören und zu verstehen, was dieses Cello spielte. Meine allgemeine musikalische Bildung reichte nicht aus, um den genauen Titel des Werks oder den Autor zu benennen. Manchmal schien es mir, dass es nicht einmal Musik war, sondern ein tiefes Gefühl von Frieden und Trost.

I photographed this phenomenal instrument being house, with its inhabitants. I tried to hear and understand what this cello was playing. My general musical education was not enough for me to name the exact title of the work or the author. Sometimes it seemed to me that it was not even music, but a deep sensibility of peace and comfort.
