„WHAT IS YOUR PLASTIC FOOTPRINT?“
Ich wurde zu einem einmonatigen Kunstprojekt bei Gleis 21 eingeladen, einer angesehenen Initiative für gemeinschaftliches Wohnen in Wien, Österreich. Während meines Aufenthalts habe ich mich mit der Gemeinschaft von Gleis 21 und der Nachbarschaft auseinandergesetzt und mein Ziel war es, Einblicke in das Kunststoffrecycling zu geben und die Menschen in den Recycling- und Designprozess einzubeziehen. Mein Hauptaugenmerk lag auf der Erforschung des Konzepts „Wie groß ist dein Plastikfußabdruck?“ und der Sensibilisierung der Bewohner:innen für den Plastikverbrauch.
I have been invited to do a one-month art residency project at Gleis 21, a distinguished co-living initiative nestled in Vienna, Austria, during my stay I engaged with the community of Gleis 21 and neighbourhood and my ambition was to share insights about plastic recycling and make the people part of the recycling and design process. My primary focus was about exploring the concept of „what is your plastic footprint?“ and raising awareness about plastic consumption among the residents.

Ziel dieses Projekts war es, die Bewohner:innen von Gleis 21 im Rahmen eines einmonatigen Aufenthalts über ihren individuellen Plastikverbrauch aufzuklären und zu informieren. Das Projekt umfasste die Nachverfolgung und Dokumentation ihres Plastikverbrauchs und förderte ein tieferes Verständnis für die Praktiken des Plastikrecyclings.
This endeavour aimed to educate and illuminate the inhabitants of Gleis 21 about their individual plastic usage through a month-long residency. The project entailed tracking and documenting their plastic consumption, fostering a deeper understanding of plastic recycling practices.

Precious Plastic ist eine globale Open-Source-Initiative mit dem gemeinsamen Ziel, das allgegenwärtige Problem der Plastikverschmutzung zu bekämpfen. Als Teil dieser Gemeinschaft engagiere ich mich seit über sechs Jahren aktiv bei Precious Plastic Portugal. Unser Engagement umfasst verschiedene Aspekte: vom Bau und Vertrieb von Maschinen für das Recycling von Kunststoffen bis hin zur weltweiten Durchführung von Schulungsprogrammen. Über diese grundlegenden Bemühungen hinaus bieten wir umfassende Designdienstleistungen an. Diese sind auf die Entwicklung von Produkten und Einspritzformen spezialisiert, mit denen neue Gegenstände vollständig aus 100% recyceltem Kunstoff hergestellt werden können. Unser Engagement geht über das bloße Recycling hinaus; wir streben danach, einen nachhaltigen Kreislauf zu fördern, in dem weggeworfenes Plastik ein neues Leben als innovative, funktionale und ästhetisch ansprechende Kreationen findet. Mit seinen vielfältigen Beiträgen möchte Precious Plastic Portugal nicht nur die Umweltverschmutzung durch Kunststoff bekämpfen, sondern auch die Einführung nachhaltiger Verfahren bei der Herstellung und Verwendung von Kunststoffen weltweit fördern.
Precious Plastic represents a global, open-source initiative united by a shared mission to combat the pervasive issue of plastic pollution. As part of this community, me as part of Precious Plastic Portugal have been actively engaged for over six years. Our involvement spans various facets: from constructing and distributing machines designed for recycling plastic and conducting educational training programs worldwide. Beyond these fundamental efforts, we offer comprehensive design services, specialising in product and mould development tailored to produce novel items crafted entirely from 100% recycled plastic. Our commitment extends beyond mere recycling; we strive to foster a sustainable cycle wherein discarded plastic finds new life as innovative, functional, and aesthetically pleasing creations. Through our multifaceted contributions, Precious Plastic Portugal endeavours to drive impactful change by not only addressing plastic pollution but also by inspiring widespread adoption of sustainable practices in the production and utilisation of plastics worldwide.

In der Werkstatt von Gleis 21 wurden offene Workshops durchgeführt, in denen das gesammelte Plastik sorgfältig nach verschiedenen Arten sortiert und dann mit einem Plastikschredder zu kleineren Flocken verarbeitet wurde. Diese Flocken, ein neu gefundenes Rohmaterial, können in innovative Kreationen verwandelt werden. Mit Hilfe der Technologie von Precious Plastic − einer Open-Source- Initiative zur Bekämpfung der Umweltverschmutzung durch Plastik − wurde das gesammelte Plastik in ein neues Objekt oder Produkt umgewandelt. Während meines Aufenthalts arbeitete ich mit Precious Plastic Vienna zusammen und konnte eine Plastikplatte, Blumentöpfe und Karabiner aus 100% recyceltem Plastik aus alten Pflanzentöpfen herstellen, die von den Bewohner:innen von Gleis 21 und einigen Nachbar:innen vom Grünen Markt, Bikes & Rails und dem lokalen Café Kaffeesatz gesammelt wurden.
Collaborative open workshop sessions were conducted in the workshop of Gleis 21, where the collected plastic was meticulously sorted into distinct types and then processed into smaller flakes with a plastic shredder. These flakes, a new-found raw material, can be transformed into innovative creations. Leveraging the technology of Precious Plastic − an open-source initiative combating plastic pollution − the collected plastic was repurposed into a new object or product. Doing my stay I collaborated with Precious Plastic Vienna and was able to produce a plastic sheet, flower pots and carabiners out of 100% recycled plastic from old plant pots collected by the residents of Gleis 21 and some neighbours from Grüner Market, Bikes & Rails and the local cafe Kaffeesatz.

Die gesamte Gemeinschaft, sowohl Kinder als auch Erwachsene, beteiligte sich aktiv am Sortieren, am Schreddern und an den Brainstorming-Sitzungen und steuerte verschiedene Ideen für den kreativen Prozess bei. Diese kollektive Beteiligung förderte ein Gefühl der gemeinschaftlichen Verantwortung für die Umweltverschmutzung durch Plastik und innovative Ansätze zur Wiederverwendung von Plastikmüll. Nach Abschluss des Kunstprojekts wurden alle von den Bewohner:innen und Nachbar:innen vorgeschlagenen Ideen für neue, zu verwirklichende Kunststoffprodukte bei einem Abschlussvortrag vorgestellt. In einem Abstimmungsverfahren konnte jeder die beste Idee auswählen. Die ausgewählte Idee wird innerhalb eines Monats mit dem gesammelten Plastik zum Leben erweckt. Die am besten bewerteten Konzepte waren eine Fahrradrampe, eine Pentagon-Form zur Dekoration, Wandfliesen oder Glasuntersetzer und ein Windspiel, bzw. ein Handyhalter. The entire community, encompassing both children and adults, actively participated sorting, shredding and in brainstorming sessions, contributing diverse ideas for the creative process. This collective involvement fostered a sense of communal responsibility towards addressing plastic pollution and encouraged innovative approaches to repurposing plastic waste. Upon the conclusion of the art residency project, all proposed ideas for new possible plastic products from both the residents and neighbours were presented at the final lecture. A voting process was open to everyone, allowing them to select the most favourable idea. The chosen idea will be brought to life using the plastic collected within a month. The top-rated concepts were a bicycle ramp, pentagon shape for decoration, wall tile or glass coaster and a wind chime or mobile phone holder. The products are currently in development and will be published via Instagram at www.instagram.com/irenauebler and www.instagram.compreciousplasticportugal.
